Tamiya TT‑02 Race Setup Guide

🏁1/10 Electric Touring Car — UK BRCA‑Ready (Carpet & Asphalt)

A complete, practical race‑tuning guide for the TT‑02, TT‑02D, TT‑02R, TT‑02RR, TT‑02SR, and TT‑02 Type‑S/SRX variants.

Baseline TT‑02 Race Setup (Start Here)

These are safe, BRCA‑friendly starting points for any TT‑02 running touring car tyres.

Ride Height

  • Carpet: 5.0–5.5 mm
  • Asphalt: 6.0–7.0 mm
  • Lower = more rotation, higher = more stability.

Droop

Measured under the arm with droop gauge blocks.

  • Carpet:
    • Front: 4.5 mm
    • Rear: 5.0 mm
  • Asphalt:
    • Front: 5.0 mm
    • Rear: 5.5–6.0 mm

More droop = more weight transfer = more grip on low‑traction outdoor tracks.

Camber

  • Front: –1.5°
  • Rear: –2.0°
  • Carpet prefers slightly less camber; asphalt prefers slightly more.

Toe

  • Front: 0° to 0.5° toe‑out
  • Rear: 2.0° toe‑in (fixed on standard TT‑02 hubs)

Toe‑out improves turn‑in. Toe‑in stabilises the rear.

Tyres & Inserts (Most Important Factor)

Carpet Tyres (UK Indoor)

Recommended:

  • Volante 28 Carpet
  • Sorex 28 Carpet

Inserts:

  • Medium–hard closed‑cell

Additive:

  • LRP Carpet 2, SXT 3.0, or MR33 Carpet
  • Apply 10–15 minutes before run
  • Wipe dry before grid

Warmers:

  • Optional but beneficial
  • 55–60°C for 10 minutes

Asphalt Tyres (UK Outdoor)

Recommended:

  • Sorex 32R
  • Volante 36R

Inserts:

  • Hard closed‑cell for hot days
  • Medium for cooler days

Additive:

  • SXT 3.0 or LRP Asphalt
  • Apply 15–20 minutes before run

Motors & Gearing:

Gearing — FDR Ranges for TT‑02 Racing

Use a high‑speed gear set (Tamiya 54500) for proper FDR tuning.

13.5T Blinky

  • Carpet: FDR 6.0–7.0
  • Asphalt: FDR 6.2–7.2

17.5T Blinky

  • Carpet: FDR 5.0–5.5
  • Asphalt: FDR 5.2–5.8

Temperature Check

  • Ideal motor temp: 60–75°C
  • Too hot → gear higher FDR
  • Too cool → gear lower FDR

Weight Balance & Flex Tuning

Battery Position

  • Forward: More steering, sharper turn‑in
  • Rearward: More stability, smoother cornering

TT‑02 benefits from slightly forward bias on carpet.

Chassis Flex

  • Carpet: Stiffer is better
    • Use top deck stiffeners
    • Tighten upper screws
  • Asphalt: More flex helps grip
    • Loosen top deck screws
    • Use softer plastic arms (TT‑02 base arms)

Steering Upgrades

Essential for racing:

  • Alloy steering bridge
  • Turnbuckle steering links
  • High‑torque servo saver

TT‑02 Variant Notes (SR / SRX / Type‑S)

TT‑02 Type‑S / SR / SRX

These versions have:

  • Adjustable suspension
  • Better geometry
  • More camber range
  • More droop control
  • Stronger hubs

Recommended settings:

  • Front caster: 4–6°
  • Front camber: –1.5°
  • Rear camber: –2.0°
  • Rear toe: 2.0–2.5° (SRX adjustable blocks)

TT‑02 Base / R / RR

  • Use 3° rear uprights for stability
  • Use adjustable upper arms for camber
  • Use oil shocks (CVA or TRF)
  • Use alloy prop shaft for consistency

TT‑02 Race Setup FAQ

What’s the best TT‑02 setup for carpet

A strong, safe, BRCA‑friendly TT‑02 carpet setup is:

  • Ride height: 5.0 mm
  • Droop: Front 4.5 mm / Rear 5.0 mm
  • Camber: Front –1.5° / Rear –2.0°
  • Toe: Front 0–0.5° out / Rear 2° in
  • Tyres: Volante 28 Carpet or Sorex 28 Carpet
  • Additive: SXT 3.0 or LRP Carpet 2
  • Flex: Stiff
  • Battery: Forward position
  • FDR (13.5T): 5.0–5.4

This is the most stable, predictable starting point for UK indoor carpet tracks.ent

What tyres should I use indoors?

For UK carpet racing, the two best options are:

  • Volante 28 Carpet
  • Sorex 28 Carpet

Use medium–hard closed‑cell inserts and apply additive (SXT 3.0, LRP Carpet 2, or MR33 Carpet) 10–15 minutes before the run, then wipe dry.

These tyres give the most consistent grip and wear across all major UK clubs.

What FDR should I run with a 13.5T motor?

For TT‑02 racing with a 13.5T blinky motor:

  • Carpet: FDR 5.0–5.4
  • Asphalt: FDR 5.2–5.8

Check motor temps after a run:

  • 60–75°C = perfect
  • Too hot → gear higher FDR
  • Too cool → gear lower FDR

Always use the Tamiya High‑Speed Gear Set (54500) for proper gearing range.

How do I fix understeer (car won’t turn)?

Try one or more of these:

  • Add 0.5° more front toe‑out
  • Move battery forward
  • Reduce front droop
  • Increase front camber to –2°
  • Use softer front tyres
  • Stiffen the rear shocks slightly

Understeer is the most common TT‑02 issue — these changes fix it quickly.

How do I fix oversteer (rear sliding out)?

Try one or more of these:

  • Add 1° more rear camber
  • Increase rear droop
  • Use harder front tyres
  • Add 10–20 g weight near the rear diff
  • Soften rear shocks slightly
  • Reduce steering EPA

This stabilises the rear and makes the car easier to drive.

Is the TT‑02 competitive for club racing?

Yes — in the right class. The TT‑02 is competitive in:

  • Beginner classes
  • TT‑02‑only classes
  • Budget touring classes
  • Silvercan / 17.5T blinky classes (depending on club rules)

It is not competitive against mid‑range or pro chassis (TA08, TRF, Xray, Yokomo, etc.), but it is excellent for:

  • Learning setup
  • Close racing
  • Cheap running costs
  • Consistent handling
  • Big grids and fun racing

The TT‑02 SR / SRX / Type‑S variants are noticeably more competitive.
